What type of color will work best for your needs?

Color is fun! It can be anything from art to an expression of your sense of style whatever that may be. We will be discussing various types of color and how they are used so you can be prepared for your next salon visit with at least some basic knowledge.

Are you ready? Let’s begin!

Most colors tend to fall under the following categories: Temporary color, Semi-permanent color, Demi-permanent color and Permanent color.

Temporary color rinses out with one shampoo service. It does not change the structure of the hair at all. You can play with this temporary color to change up your look for an event or just for fun.

Semi-permanent lasts for about 4 to 6 shampoos. It does not penetrate the hair and covers gray but it isn’t the best at it if coverage is only what you’re going for in most cases. Gray is very stubborn and rebellious! These colors are also great for use as fashion colors. Think bright reds, pinks, oranges, purples, blues, etc. These will show up better on pre-lightened hair. A color safe shampoo is recommended because most fashion colors tend to blend and you will want to reduce that as much as possible.

Demi-permanent color is a step between semi-permanent color and permanent color. It penetrates the first layer of the cuticle (hair strand/hair shaft) when mixed with an activator and lasts for about 24 shampoos. This color can cover gray very well and tone lightened hair.

Permanent color is permanent. The only way it is removed is through growing it out or color removing process but that will not take you back to your natural color. This color is mixed with developer and can lift the hair anywhere from 2 to 4 or 5 shades depending upon the color of the hair at its starting point. This color is also great for gray coverage.
